Frequently Asked Questions about this project:

Would my students have to enrol at Glasgow Caledonian University?

No - I envisage students taking part as an add-on to an existing course at their home institution.  The lectures and seminars that constitute the remainder of the module at Glasgow are not available by distance learning, so students would not be able to take the whole module.

How many students can participate?

I currently place students in groups of 7-8.  Ideally, each group should be a mix of students from differing jurisdictions.  for example, one group may contain 2 Scottish, 2 Canadian, 2 Australia, 1 English and 1 Dutch student.  So, any institution may wish to involve any number of students, from approx 7 to 40+.

How would participation be evaluated or credited?

I currently assess my students for participation, but this would really be up to the professor or module leader whose students are taking part.  There are some suggestions for assessment on the resources page.

How many online seminars exist, and would students take them all?

There are currently eight seminars running from February until the end of April.  Ideally students would take part in all of these, and remain in the same group throughout so that they can establish a rapport, although some institutions may prefer to take one or two seminars for logistical or adacemic reasons.  This would require careful planning of the groups to ensure that there were a reasonable number of students throughout the semester.

What courses or modules would this suit?

Many!  My own students are level 3 undergraduate law students, but courses with modules in nursing, medicine, psychology, philosophy, sociology, ethics, etc may find the content appropriate and stimulating.  Masters students may also find the topics interesting, particularly if the student has not previously studied the subject in depth at undergraduate level.

What details do the problem scenarios contain?

There is a sample problem scenario for medical negligence, but the rest are not detailed in depth so that my own students do not have access to the scenarios in advance of their release online.  Please email me for a zip file of the scenarios if you are interested in reading more about each topic.  I am happy to alter and re-style some of the scenarios to build on differences between the laws and customs of different jurisdictions.
